Safety Planning
You are not responsible for your partner’s abuse. A safety plan is an individualized plan that can help you identify & plan methods to enhance your and/or your children’s safety.
What is a Safety Plan?
The information in a safety plan is unique to you and your needs. This response plan will describe the actions you can take during a potentially violent event, or when leaving a violent relationship, to protect the safety of you and/or your children.
Developing a plan can help develop coping strategies, manage stress, and increase the chances of escaping a threatening environment safely. In the event that you find yourself in a situation that could become dangerous, these tips are designed to assist you in how to move forward.
Your plan might include:
-
-
- identification of warning signals,
- safety bag packing list & tips,
- strategies to quickly remove yourself from different violent situations,
- strategies to address you and/or your children’s immediate needs,
- lists & locations of important documents,
- checking which of your devices or apps have GPS tracking enabled,
- tips to stay safe at work,
- tip to practice safety with your children, and
- lists of natural & professional supports you can access for help.
-
Remember, you are the expert of your life! Your knowledge and insights are the most vital and impactful part of a response plan.
